Idea fishing again.

Been thinking of creatures that live in the forest of Tirffiniol, not just from folklore but just coming up with ideas, mainly for an upcoming scene in book 7. Deer sized or smaller, magical or mundane, but preferably things that would be terrifying yet mostly harmless. The scene I have in mind is going to be a mostly safe but scary adventure in some woods at night with wards that keep out anything too dangerous to be around kids, with a preliminary scene of the same area of the woods during the daytime for them to see animals that won't scare them off from going in at night.

While some animals there are related to Earth animals by way of Earth animals occasionally falling through the Veil into Tirffiniol and using the high magic there to evolve in many interesting ways, most species there are not related to Earth animals. But they may look like Earth animals or something that could exist on Earth, via convergent evolution.

Even if you can't think of anything specific, I love hearing ideas because then the ideas mix in my brain and give me amazing ideas like some recent ones: carnivorous deer the size of cats that climb trees, something resembling a cross between a monkey and an owl, and spider-like things the size of pomelos.

Also feel free to draw from stories you know of various cryptids, small humanoid creatures, and anything spooky you can think of, especially as doing so might jog my memory of similar stories.

Oh, I also want to note this is in the part of Tirffiniol you can only get to by portalling in from Earth in the pacific northwest region, so I'm shying away from cryptids and mythological beings from places other than North America unless they resemble something we have in North America such as how a peryton is a winged deer (and also I have griffins of various sizes), and also selecting for roughly the same sort of ecosystem/climate/landscape as the Pacific Northwest, IE mostly forested, hilly and interspersed with mountains and buttes, and has a wet season; just a little bit drier and interspersed with fields of what looks like grass but only looks that way because of convergent evolution. (These "grass" fields are big enough that massive, elephant-sized unicorns graze in these fields, only going through the wooded areas to get to more grazing areas. But Fae Springs is on top of a cliff on the other side of a ravine from most of these grassy areas, and leans more towards the forested side.)

But that's more for me to worry about. Just hit me up with ideas if you feel like it.

Scary dream

Just woke up from a dream where I had some kind of lengthy bit of thorny vine stuck in my thigh, and even though I was trying very carefully to take it out, I botched it so badly it tore my thigh wide open into such a gaping wound that I was afraid I'd die before I could get to the emergency room.

Thankfully, I then had a false awakening where I proceeded to freak out and cry about that nightmare in my sleep until I recognized I was still asleep and promptly woke up before something worse could happen.

Interestingly, I did not freak out or cry upon actually waking up. And thankfully, there was no real world pain inspiring the leg thing. Now I just have to hope I'll never have that particular dream ever again.

I still eagerly await news of her demise.

How the fuck is this woman simultaneously so untrusting of people she thinks are men in dresses, and yet so very trusting of actual men? This is a new low for her, even though it's the kind of ridiculous, self contradictory cognitive dissonance that Christianity is infamous for.

Also, she's basically like "I'm going to try to protect women from people I am wrongfully accusing of being sexual predators by encouraging women to be sexual predators."

Because yes, seriously, what she is advocating here is a sex crime and if it were actually treated that way by law enforcement the way it should be, anyone who does this would be put on the sex offender registry and probably go to prison as well.

If there is a God, I hope She makes a Hell specifically for J. K. Rowling, and I hope her Hell is being reincarnated as a 'boy' with all her memories from her present life intact. I can think of no more fitting punishment for her transphobia than her being forced to be trans herself.

45 returnables today, 20 the day before

Tonight's can walk, starting at 8:30 pm, yielded 45 returnables, filling out the second bag and getting a decent start on a third. Will probably drop those two off tomorrow at the bottle drop center so I don't have to wait a week to get more money this time.

Oh, and last night on my way back from Brooke's, I found 20 returnables. The biggest stash was in one of these yellow plastic boxes that are meant for non-deposit glass containers, but every so often I find people have filled these with not only deposit glass returnables, but also plastic bottles and aluminum cans. The one last night was just bottles, but damn, I'd love to have enough money to not only own a house and two cars but also not have to care about returning bottles with deposits to the right place to get my deposits back.

Part of why I found so many returnables last night was that because it was a Sunday and past 8 pm, the best route home was walking to the 75, getting off at Furat Court, and then walking home from there. Found some on the way to the 75, then found most of them not long after I went over the bridge by Furat Court (this bridge goes over the little valley that Springwater Corridor runs through), so it was somewhere on Tacoma.

Expanded Active Households/Homes

Another great mod has just just been uploaded at Mod the Sims: Expanded Active Households/Homes .

• This mod allows sims and pets in the active household to live in different homes and community lots around the world, without returning to the main house. The way it works is by default, sims will always live in the household's main house, but with the Sim Home Marker you can place it down on either owned private lots, unowned houses or community lots and assign any sim or pet within the active household to the marker, making the lot that the marker is on their home. If you want the sim to live back in the main house or to another, simply delete the marker or remove the sim assigned to it.

• It's useful if you like to control multiple households at once, or have a specific sim you want to move out but not remove entirely from the household, or even having family members and friends babysit babies and toddlers!

I haven't tried this or even installed it yet, but this sounds perfect for storytellers who don't want inactives to completely wreck their lives while living separately from their main family (I'm looking at you, James).

Assuming there are no issues with this mod I can think of multiple ways I could use this in both of my games. After making backup copies of my saves, I might try combining the Aeronwen/Acacia/Sarasvati homes after all the children come along. The mod could make it easier to set up scenarios such as babysitting and play-dates. This would also make it easier for friends and relatives to go horseback riding together.

The same with my Wickery Glen game; the grandparents could be made a part of the main household but still live in their own houses. And of course when the child characters become teens and young adults the mod would make it easier to keep an eye on them and make sure they don't do anything stupid (Again, I'm looking at you, James).

I'll likely post another entry once I've had a chance to try this mod out.

Edited to add: According to the comments, this mod can make the game severely laggy but experiments are being done to fix the coding. I'll hold off installing this until lag isn't so much of a problem.

Still no sign of there being a fix for the No Stretch Child Riding Horses mod disabling the werewolf animations. :(

6-26-25 Edit: A new version has been uploaded and according to the comments, the lag issue has been fixed.

Some Unfortunate Glitches

There have been some glitches found with the long awaited Child can ride horse (No Stretch) mod. None seem to be game breaking, but until/unless these bigs can be fixed, players will have to decide which they want more; children able to ride horses and be able to do so without being turned into a strange stretched out monster, or have things like the playing tag, skating and the werewolf animations working correctly.

The bugs that have been reported so far; Read more... )

Butt spiders

I had a dream during my nap wherein someone mentioned a creature called a "butt spider," which they said was a spider that lives in one's butthole. I quipped back with "They're not spiders, they're crustaceans that look and act like spiders."

So that dream universe has butt spiders I guess, even though they're not spiders. Something to put on the tourism brochure, I guess, as a warning.

Well *that* sure is interesting.

Woke up to a double surprise. First surprise, that green bag of returnables I was waiting for finally processed. Second surprise: there were two bags processed. Which led me to this conclusion: that bag that processed on Sunday, which had me paranoid for a week that maybe I had forgotten the bag tag (even though I knew I hadn't), was a bag I completely forgot I had dropped off days before, and the timing of it being processed was entirely coincidental.

Yes, that's right: I have been doing enough hunting for returnables and enough of these green bags that I completely forgot about one of them, and its coincidental processing on the same day I dropped off two others had me anxious and paranoid over nothing.

I mean, I don't even remember that bag even now, after having deduced its existence from available evidence. Maybe if I go back through my posts here on DW, I could refresh my memory, but for now I'm not bothering. So just... wow. And I still have another bag to drop off!

Horror books

I've been able to read again lately because I've been going back to my roots and reading horror. (When I was a kid, I wasn't initially keen on reading books on my own -- preferred to have them read to me -- and what made the switch for me was Goosebumps books, "Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark," and other kid's horror. But then I moved on to sci-fi, fantasy, and the occasional survival story like "Hatchet" and "Brian's Winter." Oh, and I had a phase where I kept rereading "White Fang.")

What I've been reading has been audiobooks mostly. I really liked "The Hollow Places," but I already did a post about that. Currently I'm reading another T. Kingfisher book called "The Twisted Ones," which is a horror take on stories of the "fair folk" and is also apparently a modern take on a classic horror story called "The White People."

Unfortunately, most of T. Kingfisher's stuff appears to be standard fantasy, and I'm on a horror kick, so when this book is done, I'm gonna need something else to read. And I can't stand Steven King's writing, so don't suggest his stuff. (That man's writing style is more boring that watching paint dry while Ben Stein reads technical manuals in his monotonous voice.)

But yeah, I'm taking suggestions. I especially love cosmic horror. Hell, I've got cosmic horror in my Ravenstone series.

Sixty-three returnables!

I went out can-boxing again. Went my usual route and then stopped off at home to drop off the ones I'd collected because I had gotten a full cart of them, and then went out again for more down in Milwaukie. Brought back 13 on the second trip, so sixty-three altogether. That's a fully full green bag in one day. And of course, 63 returnables is $6.30 here in Oregon.

The last time I returned full green bags, I had dropped two of them off. (Sunday, I think.) One was processed right away, and the other is still waiting. I'm very annoyed by this, and would rather they hadn't processed either of them if they weren't going to do both at once, since it can take up to a week for them to process the bags, and for me that's a week of my anxiety brain thinking "What if I forgot to put a bag tag on one of the bags?" Which is ridiculous, because that day I specifically went out with the goal of finishing filling up that second bag on the way, and I clearly remember putting tags on both bags before even leaving the apartment. But I'm not going to be able to relax fully until that second bag gets processed. And while this new bag may be full, I'm going to wait to drop it off until the last one gets processed just so I don't extend the anxiety by another week. But I'm going to put a tag on it as soon as I hit post anyway, just to be on the safe side.

And if I collect another bag full by the time the last one processes, I might take both of them in to the bottle drop center in Milwaukie just so I don't have to wait a week; ones taken there usually process within an hour, the main drawback being they charge you a bag processing fee. Waiting a week at the other places is generally worth it because the other places like New Seasons Market pay the bag processing fee for you, so you get more money. The fee is usually only about 40 or 50 cents each time, but still.

I blame Max Miller

Just woke up from a dream where I spent an hour with my parents trying to contain and clean an angry orange cat because I made a cake and covered it with peanut butter, and I was eating it and this cat that I had no idea I owned in this dream world came out of nowhere, jumped on the cake, and got absolutely plastered with peanut butter. So like I said, the rest of the dream -- which lasted a subjective hour -- was just me and my mom and dad trying to contain this cat so we could wash it, and getting the shit clawed out of us in the process.

And the reason I blame Max Miller is because before bed, I watched an episode of Tasting History With Max Miller about a boiled cake called spotted dick, and so of course that's what I was eating in the dream, except I don't know where the peanut butter came from; there was no peanut butter in the video, dream me just thought it was a good idea to slather this thing in peanut butter.

Which, to be fair to myself, is a good idea cuz spotted dick is apparently pretty bland on its own. The video featured a sauce made out of brown sugar and butter, but I don't have brown sugar, so slathering the cake and peanut butter would be a good alternative. How the hell was I supposed to know dream me had a cat? In real life, I never had an indoor cat because when I had cats, they were outdoor cats because my dad is allergic to cats, and I haven't had any cats since then. Nor any other pets.

At least the cake was good.

Sims 3 Child can ride horse mod (No Stretch)

Someone finally did it! Now those of us who know that in real life children can learn to ride a horse when they're very young can stop complaining. LOL

Child can ride horse (No Stretch).

I have not tried this mod yet but I'll likely do so later today. This mod came out just in time for me to start Gloria's reincarnated life. Now she along with the children in my Elder Scrolls themed save won't have to wait until then are teens before they can learn to ride.

Something new to look forward to; the characters' children learning to ride while they are still children.
